Since The Film Theorists made a video about AI, I decided to address me using AI for the voice in this game directly.
I needed a bunch of dialogues for this game, so I decided to use a service for this called Eleven Labs. At the time the use of AI was mostly a new fun tool that people used for memes, where the images were clearly generated as the quality was still low. This low quality also meant that at that time it couldn't really replace artist in any real sense.
Since the game was released, the advance in AI was really significant and at the same time, even the big companies started using it as they can get away with it and now it is at the same level in many cases as real artists, even videos are now at the level of being hard to tell apart!
This game was just a silly fan game, and since it used Matt as the character that needed to have a voice, the only other solution would be to hire a voice actor that would make an impression of Matt, and it would need to be pretty close to work, which wouldn't be that easy to find. This was meant to be a free small game, so I thought that it wouldn't be an issue, even more so if you consider the level at which AI was at the time.
While I think that for projects like these (small free fan games) the use of AI in some places could be justifiable, for pretty much anything else, you should go to a place like fiverr and pay a human being a few bucks to make a thing for you, instead of having AI generate it based on stolen art.
I won't be taking the game down, but I will think hard about the use of AI in my future projects, because of where this technology is heading and how it is affecting real artists.
